It has come to our attention that people and dogs are getting swooped by Falcons on Rosebank. please avoid the area, please do not go and try and find the Falcons as this can stress them out
🌲🦅 ATTENTION ALL FOREST LOVERS 🌲🦅
It's Falcon Nesting Season! The New Zealand falcon, Karearea, proudly stands as our only remaining endemic diurnal raptor (how cool is that, we have a raptor!!!) and it is a near threatened species. Rotorua is home to at least 6!! So it is super important that we look after them with all our hearts. ❤️🦅
Why are their numbers dwindling?
Well, simply put, they have evolved without any ground predators. So they just plop down on the ground and lay their eggs! Bit slack eh. 🥚🌿
Now we come along with our amazing trail doggies 🐕, who are super curious through no fault of their own, and with one little nose nudge they accidentally crush a nest of very rare, very precious eggs. No one wants that. 😔🐾
The Karearea get understandably very mad 😡 and swoop us and the doggie, and we all get hurt. It's just an all-round miserable situation. 😫🐦
What can we do?
If you get swooped, you're probably near a nest, so walk quickly away and send us a message right away with the location so we can warn other people. 🚫🚶♂️📣
Once we locate the nest, we'll let everyone know to keep away so no one gets hurt. 🙌
I could go on with so many interesting facts about these beautiful birds 🦅, like how they can dive bomb at over 200km/h, hunt prey 6 times their weight, and are used to protect vineyards in Nelson.
But I'll just point you to https://www.doc.govt.nz/.../birds-a-z/nz-falcon-karearea/
