Listening to the Groms: A Dream Line Built in Whaka

Updated: May 1

At Rotorua Trails Trust, we take our trail building and community engagement seriously — but we also know when to listen, especially when it comes from the next generation of riders. At the last Green Drinks event, a few of our local groms (Mac, Beau and crew) told us straight up: “We want to dig. But we want to do it our way — no adults telling us what to do.” Fair enough.

So, we listened.

Earlier this year, Mac and Beau officially became Trail Adopters for Pigeon Run. They took on the same responsibilities as any other adopter:

✔️ Wear hi-vis.

✔️ Report all trail work.

✔️ Promote legit, high quality trail building (and no illegal digs).

And honestly? They nailed it. They’ve done an incredible job looking after Pigeon Run — showing maturity, pride, and a serious eye for good trail work. It was clear: these two weren’t just talking the talk, they were prepared to ride the line.

So when they shared their next dream — to build their very own dream line with the help of a digger and bobcat, professional style — we knew we had to back them.

For two full days, Casey King (Rotorua Trails Trust’s own trail guru and builder of many of the best lines in the forest) teamed up with the grom crew. We brought the tools, moved the dirt, and then stood back. The kids brought the vision, the energy, and the shovel work. Together, they built something epic — a true dream line, made by groms, for groms.

This is what happens when community, passion, and trust collide. The future of trail building in Rotorua is already here — and it's wearing RTT hi-vis and sending big whips.

We’re so inspired by this crew that we’re turning this into something bigger. We’re not sure exactly how yet, but we know why: because these kids are the future of our trails, and that future is looking absolutely unreal.

Stay tuned. Whaka’s next generation is just getting started. 💥

Will you donate so we can do more projects like this in the future?
