  • Can I build a new trail?
All new trail building must go through our formal approval process. Illegal trail building is not permitted and can result in trespass from the forest or potential prosecution. If you have a great idea for a new trail, please read the Trail Development section of the website.
  • Who pays for trail maintenance?
Trail maintenance is funded through a combination of donations, grants, service agreements with Rotorua Lakes Council and volunteer work. The Rotorua Trails Trust is a registered charity that relies heavily on community support to maintain the extensive trail network. I costs us $2 per meter per year to maintain a trail. There are 300km of trails. This is why your donations and volunteer time are so valuable!
  • I found a fallen tree or other issue on a trail. Who do I contact?
Report trail issues such as fallen trees or damage by emailing info@rotoruatrailstrust.co.nz. Please include specific information about the location (trail name, exact position with a GPS pin drop) and a photo, if possible. This helps our maintenance team respond efficiently we can not respond if we do not have an exact location. Each tree costs about $120 to clear, so if you notice lots of trees down, will you donate to help?
  • How do I become a trail adopter?
Contact us at comms@rotoruatrailstrust.co.nz to express your interest in the Adopt-A-Trail program. We'll provide you with all the information you need to get started.
  • When will a specific trail be fixed up?
Maintenance priorities are determined based on safety concerns, usage levels, and available resources. While we have a schedule for all trail work in the forest, we can't provide exact timelines for every request. Having said that, we genuinely value your feedback and use it to inform our maintenance schedule. So if you see a trail that's a bit rough, please let us know. Even better, let us know when you are available to be part of the solution and can help keep the forest in amazing condition!
